Azzurri show support for Venice in St Mark's Square
An FIGC delegation featuring Brunelli, Vialli and Donnarumma visited the city to express their solidaritySaturday, November 16, 2019
Following the convincing away win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Italy side travelled from Sarajevo to Venice in the morning. As soon as they landed, a delegation led by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina along with General Secretary Marco Brunelli, Delegation Head Gianluca Vialli and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma travelled to the centre of Venice to show the Azzurri’s support for the city. After arriving at Todaro, the FIGC delegation saw various businesses damaged by the flooding, spoke with local residents, volunteers and emergency forces personnel from the Polizia Locale and Carabinieri at work in St Mark’s Square.
“Venice is an injured city but an extraordinarily strong one which has shown character and an incredible ability to get back up again,” said Gravina. “Our presence here with the National Team is a message of love for the city, its residents and everything working to restore normality after this tragic situation. The presentation of the partnership with Venice Airport has taken on extra significance and with President Marchi of the Gruppo Save who we also thank, we’re thinking of a way to offer concrete assistance.”
The delegation was greeted enthusiastically by the local residents and tourists who continue to visit the flooded city. “We’re close to Venice and the people,” added Donnarumma in front of the Basilica. “Venice will overcome this like how a sportsperson can suffer a serious injury and then go again,” added Gianluca Vialli.
At the same time, the rest of the team trained at the Taliercio Sports Centre. Those who played in Zenica worked in the swimming pool and received massages while the rest of the squad was on the pitch. Originally scheduled as a session behind closed doors, Roberto Mancini in collaboration with Venezia agreed for the screens to be lowered so the total of around 200 fans in attendance including a large number of children were able to see. After the session, the Azzurri went over to the supporters to take photos and sign autographs.
