The National Women’s University side lost out in the quarter-finals in Naples. After losing to Japan during their debut before then beating the United States, the Azzurrine were eventually defeated 4-1 by DPR Korea on Monday.
The Koreans were far too strong for Italy, who initially took the lead through Ri Un Yong in the 34th minute. Wi Yong Sim then scored a second for the visitors at the start of the second half before Inter’s Gloria Martinelli pulled one back in the 49th minute. Despite this glimmer of hope, North Korea sealed the win late on thanks to a brace from Ri Hyang Sim. Italy will now be in action once again in Benevento this Wednesday, facing off China in the semi-final for 5th to 8th place.
