The first win at Wembley, England 0-1 Italy

1973

On 14 November, the 39th anniversary after the ‘Lions of Highbury’ lost 3-2 in a fiery encounter, Italy won at Wembley for the first time. The occasion was a friendly in preparation for the World Cup that was coming up in the following year.

England attacked for 85 minutes but the Azzurri defended ably and Zoff saved all that he had to. In the 86th minute, there was a classic counterattack with Chinaglia getting away on the right before squaring for Capello who beat Shilton to silence the 100,000 strong crowd.
