Italian football mourns the passing of Mario Corso. Gravina: “We’ve lost a great champion”
One of the stars of Helenio Herrera’s Inter side, he made 509 appearances and scored 94 goals for the Nerazzurri, also recording 23 caps and four goals for ItalySaturday, June 20, 2020
The FIGC and Federation President Gabriele Gravina are united in sending their condolences the family of Mario Corso, who passed away today at the age of 78.
“We’ve lost a great champion,” said Gravina. “His class, style and magic left foot will forever remain extraordinary symbols of football in this nation.”
A set-piece specialist and nicknamed for having “God’s left foot”, Corso was one of the stars of Helenio Herrera’s “Grande Inter” side and all of their success in the Sixties. He made 509 appearances in a Nerazzurri shirt, scoring 94 goals, winning four Scudetti, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups along the way. Throughout the course of a long career which ended at Genoa, he played 23 games for Italy, scoring four goals. As a coach, along with his spells in charge of Lecce, Catanzaro, Mantova, Barletta and Verona, he led Inter to a sixth-place finish in the 1985/86 season.
