Born in Castellammare di Stabia, in the province of Naples, on 25 February 1999, at the age of just 16 Gigio found himself in AC Milan’s first team as third ‘keeper behind Diego Lopez and Abbiati. However, Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic believed so much in his ability that he started him on matchday nine of his first Serie A campaign, making his competitive Rossoneri debut on 25 October 2015. He has gone on to become the youngest player in the club’s history to make 100 appearances in the top division.
He also raced through the age groups for the Azzurri: after playing for the U15s and U17s, he received a call up for the U21 National Team from Luigi Di Biagio ahead of the 2017 European Championship qualifying matches against Serbia and Lithuania. His call up by Ventura on 27 August 2016 made him the youngest player to be selected for the National Team in the last 105 years. After his Azzurri debut, which took place on 1 September 2016 in a friendly against France, at the age of 17 years and 189 days, ‘Gigio’ became the youngest goalkeeper to have ever worn the Azzurri shirt. To date, he has made 16 appearances for the Azzurri.
