Roberto Donadoni was born in Cisano Bergamasco on 9 September 1963 and went on to be one of the key figures in the Italian National Team’s recent history, in a variety of roles. Having grown up in Atalanta he became a Milan legend, winning six Scudetti, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and four Italian Super Cups at the club. He started his journey with the National Team in the Under-21s, and immediately after the Mexican World Cup in 1986 he received the call-up the senior side, managed by Azeglio Vicini at the time. From that point onwards, Donadoni became a constant presence in the Italian midfield for a decade, playing two European Championships and two World Cups. Both in Italy '90 and in USA '94 it was penalties that extinguished his dreams of glory. After the match against Germany, which saw Italy eliminated from Euro '96, he retired from international football with a record of 63 appearances and five goals scored. The bond between Italy and Donadoni, however, was not yet destined to fade away, as he was called in to replace Marcello Lippi as National Team Coach in July 2006. Under his guidance the Azzurri qualified for the 2008 European Championship with one game to spare. Once again however, Donadoni had to endure the lottery of penalties, which saw Italy lose to Spain in the quarter-finals. This elimination marked the end of his spell leading the National Team, leaving with a record of 13 victories, five draws and five defeats.
